Sustained spheromak at General Fusion

General Fusion is developing Magnetized Target Fusion. We are using a spheromak in a 30 cm diameter flux conserver as the initial pre- compression plasma. We recently upgraded our spheromak with sustainment current. After an initial formation pulse of ~1 MA, a sustainment current of 180 kA is maintained for ~1 ms. The magnetic life increased from 250 us to 600 us. Electron temperature rose from 150 eV to 290 eV. Fluctuation of the magnetic field dropped from >10% to <1%. The sustainment current gives good results over a narrow range of ~10%. Too much and the spheromak develops an n=1 instability.Not enough and the n=2 mode is excited. Preliminary results from explosively driven compression of this calmer sustained spheromak will be presented.
