Exploratory study of fluctuations and toroidal magnetic field dynamics in the C-2 field reversed configuration plasmas

Abstract Text:
A two-chord far infrared (FIR) laser polarimetry/scattering diagnostic system has been implemented in the C-2 field reversed configuration (FRC) experiment. The polarimetry has very high phase resolution that can resolve in real time a 100 kHz oscillation with 0.05° amplitude in Faraday rotation. The dynamics of toroidal magnetic field in C-2 FRC plasmas will be explored with polarimetry. Electronic noise limited far-forward scattering data quality is achieved. Both polarimetry and scattering data have a bandwidth up to 1.2 MHz, ideal for the study of MHD fluctuations and low frequency turbulence. The correlation of fluctuations with profile (ne, Te) gradients and transport will also be explored.
